Same old, same old

Song of the night:
Groove Armada - Chicago
It's 0210 am, Groove Armada's been playing all night from the iBook that I borrowed from my flatmate, I kissed my girl good-night on the phone almost one and a half hours ago and I can still feel the flu battling with my immune system and the medication - yet I'm unable to fall asleep, as there is so much going through my head right now.

Last weekend was a blast.
Finally meeting S in BN after weeks of being confined to ICQ and Skype was terrific, and the weekend more than I could have hoped for. She makes me feel good, whole and she makes me smile. I'm genuinely happy thanks to her and I hadn't fully realised how much I missed having someone who makes me feel this way and returns the emotion on the same level.
When meeting her on Friday for the first time since October '05, there was no eerie moment, no awkward silence in which we had to wait and see if things were in real life as they had been in the chats and talks; it just smoothly transcended from virtual to actual reality and it felt great then, and still continues to feel great, despite the 1500 kilometers separating us physically now that I'm back in TRE.
Saturday was spent with her and Quug, hiking across the countryside just half an hour south of BN, through quite a beautiful landscape. Felt great to be outside again, and thanks to the awesome weather and great company it made me feel as if I truly was on vacation. (Pictures can be found here.)
The time to return back to Finland came way too early, metaphorically as much as literally with me having to check in at 0800am on Sunday morning. S was in tears, I wanted to stay longer ... and even though returning to snow-clad and sunny Helsinki was nice for a change back to winter scenery, it couldn't quite compensate for the warm and fuzzy feeling in my stomach I had felt during the weekend.

Sunday brought lots of work already. Had to get stuff sorted so I could return the laptop I had borrowed from the office, which meant quite some time being spent with backing up logs, uninstalling applications and the grim reality of no more distraction of idle thoughts by my beloved EVE-Online; well, for the time being, until my PC arrives anyway.
I spent a good two hours on cleaning the laptop from all those useful little software gadgets I had been using, double- and triple-checking uninstallation and deletion of chat logs etc (wouldn't that be quite the office story, considering some of those chats!) and finally went to bed way too late, as usual.

Work on Monday felt a bit dull and more grey than usual, but that may well have been due to the impending thawing weather and subsequent snow slush everywhere.
My Brazilian colleague burst out into a huge happy bear-hug when I told her I wasn't single anymore, and my Italian flatmate just grinned at me, muttering something along the lines of "ye dirty fecker" (yes, we're all adopting a slight Scottish accent!), but apart from that nothing worth noting happened.
Monday evening had me slowly coming down with what turned out to be yet another flu attack, and Tuesday morning had me paying the doc a visit. He sent me home for 3 days and prescribed me some medication against sore throat and my nosebleeding problems, and so far they've helped a bit at least. Still feeling sore and exhausted, but at least it got a bit better, and I've only had nosebleeds once today. I guess that's something. I'll still go and see if I can catch our doc when I'm home after New Year's, to have him give me a proper check-up. The persistent nosebleed/headache combo is starting to worry me a bit...

Since yesterday, I've spent most of my time sleeping or being half-asleep in bed, or sitting in front of the alien iBook and figuring out how to find my way around in this strange OS, with the strange keyboard (and of course it's a UK layout too!) and oh-so-different functionality to "good ol' Windows". I have to say I'm sincerely beginning to like it, and I see more and more useful and helpful stuff that I had been missing in Windows. At the same time though, I'm not fully over the alien touch and feel yet, and sometimes I wish for the familiar way of Windows. I'm sure I'll get past that soon enough .. I'm probably stuck with this for another 7-10 days or so, depending on how soon Zzz manages to mail me the PC. Overall, it's a very nice experience and I could imagine getting myself some sort of iBook/Mac for a change ... once I'm rich, influential and powerful and all that. ;)

For now, I'll give sleep another try. It's only 0250am but who knows what fairy might come along and knock me out...

Geek humour gone wild

Song of this post:
Cypress Hill - Tequila Sunrise
Courtesy of my younger brother (who probably caught it somewhere on the net).
If there are only DEAD people who know how to read hexadecimal, how many people are there in total?
Let's see how many geeks are reading my blog. ;)
